Follows real-life Sindhu from 1960s India, in an abusive marriage, to sleeping in cemeteries and begging on the streets before opening four orphanages and becoming an internationally renowned humanitarian in the present day.
Sindhutai Sapkal’s epic journey begins with her childhood dreams cut short when she is married off at 12 to a 30 year old man. It follows her struggles as a young, abused wife in a small village in India. 9 months pregnant and almost beaten to death she gives birth to her daughter in a cowshed. Ousted by her husband and village she ends up as a beggar in the streets of Pune, India sleeping in cemeteries.
What would have been a catastrophe for most, transforms her. Instead of committing suicide, Sindhu stops to to feed a dying man on the side of the road which in turn changes the course of her life . She ends up feeding many homeless children and then opening four orphanages raising over 1400 children. Her fight for the rights of indigenious tribal people brings her leadership in spotlight. Sindu finds a reason to live in helping people nobody else cares about to ensure that their dreams are not cut short like hers were. We watch the heartbreaking and hopeless lives of Deepak, Shiva and Gayatri as “slumdog” children, and then the hope and purpose their lives develop after being taken in by Sindhu.
For her work, Sindhu has been not only honored by universities, celebrities and presidents, she is also the most awarded humanitarian in India. Godmother will paint a colorful and compelling picture of a woman’s journey from literal rags to one of the most respected women, the “Mother of Orphans”, in India. This is an inspirational story, that brings tears and joy, about the redemptive power of a mother’s love.
